The Penguins Are Coming!

Here at Birdworld we are busy putting the finishing touches to Penguin Beach, home to our new colony of 30 African Penguins. By recreating their habitat of Robben Island South Africa, Birdworld's Penguin Beach will make the penguins feel at home and allow you to encounter these amazing birds at close quarters.

Arriving on the quayside you'll have views over the harbour to the penguins on the beach, then stroll along the boardwalk and see the penguins up close from one of the hides or viewing areas, which lead out through the nesting grounds.

Feeding will take place daily, but for the ultimate African Penguin encounter you can join the bird keepers yourself and help them feed the penguins."

Penguin Beach is due to open in time for half term and alongside Birdworld’s popular Farm Fun week this makes it a fantastic time to visit.

Will and Kate arrive at Birdworld

Birdworld has two very special new arrivals this week. Although not too recognisable at present, these fluffy little individuals will in fact grow into sleek Humboldt’s Penguins.

Not having names, it didn’t take the Birdworld keepers too long to come up with Will and Kate to mark the occasion of this weeks royal wedding celebrations. Guests of the wedding undoubtedly had a fish course as part of the wedding breakfast but Birdworld’s Will and Kate will eat nothing but fish.

At this early stage in their lives this feeding process is a job for the keepers as these penguins are being hand reared in the hope that the parent birds may raise a second clutch themselves. Feeding takes place 4 times a day at present and unlike adult birds the chicks can not manage the fish whole, so before feeding takes place the fish has to be cut up into manageable pieces. Please spare a thought for staff at Birdworld, as Will and Kate were only the first of many more eggs due to hatch.

As these youngsters progress, visitors will get plenty of opportunity to see them and they will of course join the adults in the main pool when they can swim. Penguin lovers will also be pleased to know that Birdworld will also soon be home to a colony of African Penguins which will be taking up residency in the brand new Penguin beach exhibit which is due to open at the end of May.  (04/05/11)

Birdworld’s new attraction coincides with British Tourism Week.

In recognition of British Tourism week from 12th-20th March, Birdworld at Farnham are pleased to announce that work has begun on a brand new exhibit called Penguin Beach. It will be home to a colony of adorable African Penguins and is due to open at the end of May. This will compliment the existing attractions at Birdworld, which includes birds from all around the world, Underwater World, Jenny Wren Farm plus a full itinerary of daily events.

This fantastic walk through aviary is based on Robben Island, just off the coast of South Africa, and will give visitors the experience of arriving at the quayside with views over the harbour towards the main beach area. From the quay, visitors are led along boardwalks out across the beach and right through the middle of the penguins, giving great close up viewing and fantastic uninterrupted photographic opportunities. Visitors will leave the experience feeling as if they have visited the island without travelling the 6000 miles to get there!

British Tourism week, which is co-ordinated by VisitBritain, is now in its fifth year with the aim of raising the profile of the tourism industry, which is now the fifth largest industry in the country. Birdworld manger, Mark Anderson said,” with tourism being so important to the UK economy we are delighted to be in the position of currently adding to our attraction and being a part of the wonderful visitor experience that our country has to offer.”
