Conservation at Birdworld

We aim to establish a portfolio of field conservation initiatives so that at any one time we are supporting up to two each of local, national and international projects.

Local


Blue Tit Nest Monitoring
We are monitoring the nesting activity in 24 nest boxes across the site. Young will be ringed before fledging with BTO closed rings to help to assess longevity. We will also fit coloured plastic leg rings to the young, with a different colour for each nest allowing us to monitor movements across the site once fledged.
 

School Initiative
Birdworld has supported 6 local schools by providing trees, shrubs, nest boxes, and willow poles to help increase and observe wild life within the school grounds.
 

Butterfly Garden
In conjunction with the local Butterfly conservation meadow at Bentley, Birdworld is developing a garden area to help sustain Butterfly breeding within the site.

National


Moth Monitoring
We are providing data for this National project which has been running for over thirty years and shows changes in moth distribution across the UK as climate and habitats change. This data is used in the development of
Biodiversity Action Plans for the protection of native species of plants and animals.
 

Great Bustard Reintroduction
We are pleased to support this ambitious project to re-introduce the world’s heaviest flying bird to the Salisbury plains in the South of England. Each year chicks are brought from Russia for the project and the released birds are closely monitored to ensure they have the best chance of surviving and establishing breeding success.

International


Protect a Penguin
Some of the most enigmatic species on earth, penguins are in increasing danger due to collection of guano for fertiliser, man’s over fishing of penguin prey and shifts of weather patterns and oceanic currents due to climate change. With your help we aim to raise funds for the conservation of penguins in the wild.

BIAZA / WLT Rainforest Reserve 
One of the most threatened habitats on earth, the Atlantic Rainforest of South America, needs urgent protection. Funds raised at Birdworld have helped a local charity to purchase nearly 2000 acres of land which will be managed as a reserve for the benefit of all.

Many of the species kept at Birdworld are threatened in the wild and are part of international breeding programmes to ensure the survival of their species. See our species list for further details.
