In all areas of our company, we do everything practical to operate as a sustainable business. As such, our aim is that all of the activities we carry out should cause the minimum of impact to the environment where possible.

Some of the activities we carry out are as follows: -

Recycling - All of our waste material and bi-products are split down and recycled whenever possible. This includes paper, cardboard, polystyrene, plastics, aluminium cans, ink cartridges, cooking oil and many more items. To help with this, we have invested in machinery to compact and bale bulk materials so that they are suitable for collection from recycling companies.

Non recyclable waste - any items that cannot be recycled inevitably have to be sent for landfill. To minimise the amount produced, we have again invested in compaction technology, which in turn reduces the need for skip collection and therefore unnecessary transportation.

Energy efficient premises - As any new developments occur, opportunities to reduce energy consumption are sought with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions and water use.

Proactive involvement with business environmental schemes - In the past few years we have been part of several environmental improvement initiatives. These include: -

  1. Business ECO Network- a waste minimisation project run in association with Surrey Business Partnership and funded by the Surrey SITA Environmental Trust. (A case study can be found on the E generation website).
  2. Runner up in the 2001 SEEDA sustainable business awards (3.21Mb Pdf).
  3. More recently, Birdworld has joined a pilot project with The Green Tourism Business Scheme. This is being run in association with Tourism South East with the aim of making a 'greener' industry.

In addition to the areas listed, there are numerous other initiatives being carried out, which are all aimed at improving the environment and operating wherever possible as a sustainable business.
