Back
in 1967, the Forestry Commission owned the land for
the Jenny Wren Farm, which was used for dairy farming. In
the 70's, the then owners of Birdworld bought it to farm
beef cattle. In 1990 the land was turned into Jenny Wren
Farm as an added attraction to Birdworld. Under the new
ownership in 1996, the farm was further improved and developed.
It has rapidly become one of the most popular areas of the
park, especially with youngsters who love the opportunity
to get close to, and even stroke some of their favourites
in our special 'Animal Encounter' sessions. These sessions
are popular too with schools and playgroups that visit during
term time.
Staff are always on hand to look after and care for the
animals as well as talk to our many visitors.
The farm started with 2 Dexter cows, 4 ponies, 1 goat and
some rabbits and, over its many years, the number of animals
has steadily increased and now includes many rare and unusual
breeds.
Although
the farm is not run commercially, we attempt to give it
a working atmosphere, which includes as much interaction
for the public as possible. There is access to the pygmy
goats who are always after an extra snack, so enter if you
dare!
The smaller animals are fun to watch as well and include
guinea pigs, chinchillas, chipmunks and for those less squeamish,
rats and mice.
Many of the smaller animals are bred on the farm, especially
the rabbits! These we sell on to good homes to help with
the running costs. You can also purchase guinea pigs, chicks,
ferrets and chinchillas from the farm (when available).
Many of our chickens are good layers, so fresh free-range
eggs are frequently on sale too during the summer.
