THE GREENER ROUTE Possibly the most environmentally friendly route to Birdworld is via a train to Bentley station followed by a walk through the Alice Holt Forest. Even if you do have a car this makes an interesting and fun alternative way of getting here whilst at the same time being just a little kinder to the planet! Click on the link below to download a copy of the directions from Bentley station. The sheet also includes space for children to jot down any wild life they have seen on route. You may be lucky enough to see deer, woodpeckers, foxes a whole host of butterflies and maybe even some birds of prey! The walk takes up to 45 minutes at a 5 year olds pace (also accounting for time to stop and chat to fellow forest walkers) but very easily 30 minutes for adults. Click here to download printable directions (.pdf file) If you have a bit of spare time on the way back you may want to stop
off at the Bentley Butterfly Meadow which is next to the station. This
site of special scientific interest is managed by ' Butterfly Conservation'
and always displays up to date information on what to look out for. Notable
species include Purple Emperor, Silver Washed Fritillary and Grizzled
Skipper. Most of the route is on tarmac or stone paths however the last section is a little rougher and can be a bit soggy after periods of rain. Good footwear is therefore recommended! You may find the 'going' a little too rough for small-wheeled pushchairs and buggies but it is fine for the modern 'all terrain' versions. Unfortunately the last section is probably too rough for wheel chair access. If after your day at Birdworld you feel too tired to make the return journey on foot you can always take a bus back to Farnham to catch the train or a taxi to Bentley or Farnham stations. The walk is so nice that you may even choose to leave your car at Bentley station if the train is not for you. (Please note that the car park at Bentley station is pay and display.)
