Black-cheeked Lovebirds are considered Africa's most endangered parrot since they are found only in a small region of Zambia. They are such wonderful birds to watch, highly social with strong pair-bonds and friendship groups. You can often find pairs sitting closely together, preening each other and making a range of noises, which is important to maintain these strong bonds.
Typical of parrots, they are very colourful and vocal. This is essential to their survival as their chicks are ideal food for tree-dwelling snakes such as the Boomslang. The loud chaos around their nests is a great defence as the snakes are quickly spotted and chased out of the area by all the adults working together.
If you are looking for a meaningful gift for someone special, we have the perfect one for you!
We have a healthy flock of Lovebirds at Birdworld, so it requires a lot of vigilance from our keepers to establish who all the pairs are. Breeding season is the best time to watch our Lovebirds as they get extremely excited about their nest boxes - usually exploring the options whilst keepers are still putting the boxes up! In the wild they seek small cavities in trees, lining them with dry leaves and grasses, which the chicks then burrow into when hatched.
