Take a look at one of the best builders in the animal kingdom!

He may seem unassuming, but the Hamerkop (found mostly in sub-saharan Africa) is the species that builds the biggest nest in the bird kingdom. Similar to the den of a beaver, the nest of a hamerkop consists of sometimes thousands of sticks to create walls, an entrance tunnel, a roof and a nesting chamber. Some have been known to support the weight of a full-grown man!

Our amazing hamerkop lives in our Sheashore Walk aviary – see if you can spot him on a visit to Birdworld.

Penguins are expert swimmers, but can they breathe underwater? The answer is no! they’re not fish!
 🐧
Birds must go to the surface to take a breath just like people. They can, however, hold their breath for nearly 3 minutes! Got to catch those fish somehow!
